STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

The road into Racetrack Valley is a very rough and rocky 25 mile long, slow ordeal. However the isolation and austere surroundings are well worth the effort. This image was taken a few minutes after a sunrise shot (see # CADDV 22 in Gallery 1) with the dry lakebed taking on a totally different hue. In this image  the rising sun illuminates clouds and the top of Ubehebe Peak above the dry lakebed or playa called "Racetrack". Reflection of warm light from nearby peaks and clouds has turned the surface of the playa from a cream tone to a light brown. A gradual neutral density filter was used to prevent the contrast range from being greater than the film could record. Ten minutes later the drama was over and it was time for breakfast.

Technical:    Toyo 45 AII field camera with Nikon SW 90/4.5 lens and Fuji Velvia film
