  STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

I had hiked several miles the previous day, but this scene was ridiculously close to a paved road in Rocky Mountain National Park. Sometimes you just take 'em where you find 'em. Here lichen-encrusted rocks with a slight bluish hue provided a nice color contrast with the red and yellow aspen leaves. This scene would be much too shadowed under direct sunlight as soft light from a cloudy day was again necessary to avoid too much contrast in the image. Over the next 45 minutes I managed two exposures during intervals with both calm wind and cloud cover, then the clouds disappeared and my photo op abruptly ended.
Interestingly, one of my exposures was on  Fuji Velvia and the other on Kodak E100VS. Both were properly exposed. This is one situation where E100 VS outperformed Velvia: a softly lit subject with a predominance of yellow, red and orange color. It also is an ISO 100 film which prevented the need for an even longer exposure time.

Location:     Near Bear Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Technical:   Toyo 45 AII field camera with Schneider APO 210/5.6 and Kodak
                     Ektachrome E100VS film

Exposure:   1/2 sec at f/40
