STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE | ||||
|
|
This particular
morning, I awoke to snow at the rim campground in The Black Canyon of the
Gunnison National Park. Here I photographed a nice stand of Gambels oaks packed
with fresh snow (see # CORBC106 in Gallery 2). Sadly however, there was no snow sticking to the rocks inside the
canyon. I then headed south over Dallas Divide which was
"socked in" and unshootable. I was looking for a scene
with snow and some fall-colored aspen to symbolize the changing of the
seasons. Near Telluride the snow began to stop and the fog lifted enough
to display a perfect hillside. Conifers coated with snow ascended a slope
with scattered aspen displaying a range of color. The sky began to drop
more snow and my opportunity soon became a test of patience. I couldn't
shoot when it was snowing as this would create distracting white streaks
through the frame. The best plan was to set the view camera up on a
tripod, compose the image and wait with a coat tossed over the camera.
After about 2.5 hours I had four or five good images with the best one featured above. Location: Uncompahgre National Forest, near Telluride, Colorado Technical: Toyo 45 AII field camera with Nikon T 360/8 lens on Fuji Velvia 50 film Exposure: 1/2 second at f/40
