This patch of Lily-of-the-Valley was found along the southern Oregon coast in
spring. They were growing beneath some Sitka Spruce trees on a bluff
about 150
yards from the ocean. The thick leaves of this plant offer some
resistance to the constant salt spray in the coastal atmosphere. Some
front tilt on the view camera helped to align the subject plane with the
film plane and maintain near and far focus. Soft, shadow-free morning light
is common along the coast in the Pacific Northwest but the accompanying
lack of wind made the 3 second exposure possible. After about 45
minutes and a few sheets of film I looked up and saw a bobcat emerge from
dense brush into an open field. The view camera which I was using is great
for scenics and closer views but works poorly for wildlife images. This
was the only time I've seen a bobcat in the wild. I tried to make it back
to the pickup for a 35mm camera and a long lens but after about 20 seconds
the bobcat retreated back into the brush.
