STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE | ||||
|
|
This image was
from a family camping trip to the northern Great Plains in early June. I
am from western Oregon and thunderstorms here are rather uncommon and
usually not too intense. This is definitely not the case in the Plains
States as a very intense storm forced us out of our totally soaked tent
and into a motel one evening. These powerful rains play a major role in
shaping the soft sedimentary formations that comprise The Badlands. On
this particular evening storms threatened but the rain abated. Near
sunset the sun hung over the western horizon with no clouds blocking it
while clouds over the formations added drama to the eastern sky. This is
one of my favorite shooting situations, low angle light illuminating the
main subject with dramatic clouds above.
