Silver
Falls State Park is located at about 1,200 ft elevation where the Cascade
Foothills meet the edge of the Willamette Valley. At this elevation rain is common
but snowfall is a very ephemeral event. On this particular day, I arrived
in the morning on slippery roads to find the trees surrounding
the waterfall covered with fresh snow. I had to wait for the
snow to stop to
get good images. At the 1/2 second exposure used, any falling snow would be registered as
distracting streaks through the frame - not the desired effect. The
exposure was based on a spotmeter reading on the snow. I then opened up about 1 2/3
stops from that reading to keep the snow white.
